ABOUT PHIL

Phil is an Anglo-Kiwi who hails originally from Lancashire, England and now lives in Whitianga, a seaside town in the beautiful Coromandel in New Zealand. Most years he performs in the UK from April to October, and in NZ from December to March.
Phil's concerts are an eclectic mix of ancient and modern English Heritage folk songs, his own compositions and the odd cultural surprise. His arrangements are uniquely creative and blended with a soupcon of Lancashire chat and witty banter. His vocals and guitar work have been described as 'outstanding' and he has a natural ability to establish a warm rapport with his audience. A club organizer recently commented "Phil breathes new life into our English folk-heritage material."

Walking With Wainright

Very pleased to upload a new video featuring a new song of mine - a tribute to Lancastrian and Englishman Alfred Wainright and that beautiful part of England called The Lake District where, as a youth, I spent memorable weekends climbing and walking. I released it early in the hope that it might provide some interest for the folk attending this year's Langdale Charity Folk Festivals - a neat grass-roots event that I performed at four years ago, whose funds are donated to the Lakeland Rescue Services. Good cause. <Click Here> to buy the mp3 Download.

Ethnic English Folk-Culture in New Zealand

All of my albums are now available to NZ schools, tertiary institutions, researchers, cultural organizations, publishers and authors, librarians and the general public at The National Library of New Zealand website. The Alexander Turnbull Library audio collection has added Two Ravens, The English Lament, and The Best English Singalong Folksongs CDs to Full Circle (uploaded in 2010) to its online collection - acknowledging the contribution that immigrant ethnic English people and our folk-culture continues to make to New Zealand's evolving multicultural identity. I'm well chuffed.

Where's Phil?

Just in case anyone is wondering where I've disappeared to, I'm currently taking a wee break from performing, although I'll be popping in at one or two folk clubs here in NZ over the next few month.
I've recently started work on writing and recording some new songs (and one or two English traditional ones of course) for a new album. Planned release date is around mid-July 2013, so look out for that. Plus, a Freebie album that might well involve reworked, unplugged, bare bones guitar and vocal versions of previously released tracks. We'll see. Best wishes and keep on strummin', Phil.

COMMENTS

"At our concert in February in Meow, Nelson the name of English folksinger, Phil Drane from Lancashire, attracted lots of people. Phil accompanied his singing with some great guitar playing. The arrangements were beautifully intricate and perfectly performed. I also loved his singing which reminded me a little of Bob Fox. He presented a good mix of traditional and more modern folk music. Thank you Phil, for a great evening". …. Annie Van Herk, Acoustic Routes Club, Nelson, NZ

“A brilliant evening of Englishness! The Debenham Folk Club always wants the best and we certainly got the best! I can't think of another artist on the scene who could have held mostly non folkies in rapt attention for 2 and a half hours. Quality & craftsmanship!" .... Robert Brown , Debenham Folk & Acoustic Club, Suffolk.

“Phil Drane was excellent last night at Glenfarg Folk Club, Scotland. Great songs (including lots with choruses!), great voice, superb guitarist. He lives between Lancashire and New Zealand and is a really interesting friendly bloke. If you missed him at Glenfarg, he is at Dunfermline Folk Club on Wednesday (6 July) .... “Loved Phil Drane’s set last night. Excellent presentation, musically clean and interesting coupled with brilliant singing and some very interesting musical ideas. Plenty of variations to keep a jaded old folky like me happy! Highly recommended – a sophisticated choice for a first class club night” …. Jon McNamara, Stortfolk, Bishops Stortford
