Two Ravens

£10.00

This, Phil's second album is again mainly ethnic English folk-heritage music and features four of his own compositions including the award-winning "Song For Jackie", along with a beautiful version of the Maori love song "Pokarekare Ana" that he arranged when he was back in New Zealand. This is a gutsy, down to earth album - honest and without frills and thoroughly English. (Sleeve notes & lyrics can also be found in the 'Blog' section)

Full Circle is Phil's first album and contains the kind of unpretentious, uncomplicated Contemporary & Traditional English Heritage music that underpins Phil's club and concert performances. High Germany (New Version) [4:53]  lyrics
We forget that these songs about soldiers and battles were written by commoners, not generals or the gentry. Consequently, the purpose of the song is to convey the actions, thoughts, and feelings of the characters central to the story - the very common folk to whom this 'musical social history' belongs. Often these songs have been hijacked by middle class academics for endless 'study' - to which battle does this song refer? what was the exact date and who were the protagonists? how many cannons did both sides have? who won the battle? Questions which have lttle interest to the common folk to whom these songs belong. In this version I tried an experiment to give it a fresh and interesting rhythm, so I pinched a bit of bluegrass fiddle shuffle to produce some 'drive', and slightly modified the vocal intonation. The words are unchanged and are still about how young Englishmen were shipped overseas regularly to be shot and blown up, how loved ones were left behind, and how their relationships and lives were destroyed by the warmongering, greedy and power-mad British ruling classes.

Freebie Bonnie George Campbell [4:50]  lyrics
A song that paints a vivid mental picture and sets a storyline in only four verses. The central character George Campbell obviously dies but we are required to use our imagination and figure out how. The battle itself is the Battle of Glenlivet 1594.

Freebie Lost Folkie Walkin Talkin Blues [6:29]  lyrics
A song that began with a modicom of factuality, then wandered into a tale of pure fiction. When I started writing this I had no idea where it was going, so indeed it went nowhere - but there was a festival, and it was a 20 quid fee, and Richard Grainger is indeed a legend in Yorkshire.
